Picking a video category that performs
Pick the category the game is trending, not the one you like; then keep the format recognisable. Two straight flops in one lane is the signal to rotate.
Every video in Become a Youtuber! belongs to a category, and categories behave like real YouTube niches: some pay better, some grow subscribers faster, and all of them rotate in and out of the trend window.
How the categories behave
| Category | Feel | Good at |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming | The default lane | Steady views, common audience |
| Cooking | Reliable performer | Going viral when it lands |
| Tech | Higher effort, higher ceiling | Riding trends hard |
| Music | Niche | Loyal subscribers |
| Fitness | Challenge-driven | Sponsor attention |
| Comedy | Volatile | Big spikes, cold spells |
The names matter less than the behaviour: whatever is trending in the current rotation is worth more than whatever you personally prefer. Watch the trend indicator before choosing.
Picking a category, three questions
- Is it trending? If yes, take it. If nothing is trending, take your best category and upload again.
- Does it match your gear? Cheap gear struggles in high-production lanes; the upgrades guide covers what each item changes.
- Has it worked for you before? Your own history is the best signal in the game.
Series, not one-offs
Players who subscribe subscribe to a pattern. A series gives them one:
- Same category, new episode. "Cooking night 4" tells a viewer what they are getting.
- Same format, new subject. A challenge series works even when the niche rotates.
- Numbered titles. They signal a body of work, and they make your channel look established.
When to abandon a lane
Two consecutive flops in one category is data. Take the trendiest available lane for two uploads and compare:
- Views up, subs flat: you found a view lane, not a subscriber lane. Reply more.
- Both up: stay.
- Both flat: the trend layer moved; keep rotating until something catches.
The views guide has the full diagnostic, and the trends page covers how the rotation behaves.
